Senses

Senses

Taste chocolate chip Mickey-Mouse pancakes
Feel sand in shoes, warm slide, wind as you fly
Hear laughter, happy birthday, and “Say Cheese”
Smell pepperoni pizza; hot, homemade
See mom’s leg, dad’s newspaper, Bug’s bunny.

Feel her hand, her mouth, body beside you
Smell smoke, cheep beer, someone vomited near
See failed grades, prom dress, flowers, mother’s grave
Taste strawberry bubble gum, cinnamon
Hear “Bad Romance,” Feet pounding, Siren’s ring.

Hear chapel bell’s ringing after “I Do”
Taste lemon cake, champagne, love on her lips
Smell roses, Aunt Sally’s perfume, some sweat
See her eyes, her face, her dress, beautiful
Feel too many emotions, perfect joy

See small hands, a tiny head, her smiling
Hear crying, talking, my heartbeat pounding
Taste morning breath covered by spearmint gum
Feel his little fingers wrapped around mine
Smell sterilized mask mixed with hospital

Smell rubber tubes, plastic food, fresh clean sheets
See clock ticking, get well cards, family
Feel heavy lungs, achy joints, hope and faith
Hear beeping machines, the words “I Love You”
Taste nothing, try to remember pancakes.
